End Soviet Union Leaders in the Post Stalin Era The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, essentially alluded to ask the Soviet Union, was a communist express that spread from Northern and Eastern Europe to different pieces of Central Asia. It dated between the 30th of December 1922 and the 26th of December 1991. Until its breakdown in 1991, it comprised of very nearly 15 constituent republics that are recognized today as: â€Å"Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan† [ (Rosenberg) ]. The dad and originator of the Soviet Union was no other than Vladimir Lenin who figured out how to set the establishments of the USSR in the wake of ousting Tsar Nicholas II in November of 1917, lastly building up a Soviet government in 1922. McCauley (1993) depicts some of Lenin’s arrangements during his rule as the accompanying: nationalizing all banks and significant business ventures, conveying grounds to laborers, reintegrating a few states into Bolshevik Russia, and trading the socialist belief system. After Lenin’s demise in 1924, Joseph Stalin was named as the â€Å"General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU). † Stalin, and through outfoxing and gradually banishing his adversaries, figured out how to set up an authoritarian system and name himself as the incomparable pioneer of the Soviet Union in the late 1920’s. Stalin’s period in office was both obliterating and expensive to the Soviet Union in particularly in its residential approaches. Stalin’s multi year financial arrangement (the fast industrialization of the USSR) created amazing outcomes, yet cost the lives of around â€Å"14. 5 million peasants† (â€Å"http://www. moreorless. au. com/executioners/stalin. html, â€Å"), and harvested the lives of very nearly twenty million individuals and ousted more than twenty five others from their homes. Stalin’s abhorrent and shocking guideline finished when he kicked the bucket on the fifth of March, 1953. Stalin’s unexpected expire left a significant void wherein many were anxious to fill. The result of Stalin’s demise brought about an arrangement of aggregate authority. The key figures of this shared principle were: â€Å"Nikita Khrushchev, Lavrenti Beria, Nikoli Bulganin, Georgy Malenkov, Vyacheslav Molotov, and, Lazar Kaganovich† (http://www. fortunecity. com/victorian/riley/787/Soviet/Khrushchev/Krushchev. html). During this period, the battle to affect a chief to head the Soviet Union confronted numerous turbulences and changes. Toward the start, Malenkov accepted force as acting Premier, and Khrushchev embraced his predecessor’s (Stalin) position as First secretary of the CPSU. Along these lines, and by 1955, Georgy Malenkov had to surrender his situation as Premier, and was subbed by Nikoli Bulganin (who was upheld and supported by Khrushchev). After Stalin’s passing, his replacements continued to wander from the latter’s pitiless and fierce procedures. Shockingly, and in a six hour discourse in the twentieth Party Congress, Khrushchev reprimanded and denounced Stalin’s wicked rule. This progression constrained a lot of strain to the First Secretary as McCauley (1987) depicts, particularly with his countrymen in the aggregate administration circle. Two death endeavors later, and a bombed ejection plot set by Kaganovich, Molotov, and Malenkov against him, Khrushchev despite everything figured out how to reinforce his capacity moreover. Unexpectedly, and in 1958, Nikoli Bulganin had to leave by a similar man who supported his arrangement, and Khrushchev expected both the situation of Premier (on the 27th of March) and First Secretary of the CPSU. In spite of the fact that Khrushchev worked intently and for a long time with Stalin, in any case he was curiously not at all like the last mentioned. Dissimilar to Stalin’s unforgiving way and look, Volkogonov (1998) portrays Khrushchev as to a greater degree an approaching, wonderful, hilarious, and vigorous person. Their disparities are without a doubt perceptible as Khrushchev set out on another strategy of De-Stalinization, set to cross out Stalin’s ridiculous history from the Soviet Union’s universal picture and its people’s minds. As a component of his new approach he started with renaming all the urban communities that conveyed Stalin’s name and all photos and sculptures of Stalin were decimated (as not to leave any check to be a rest of him). Thusly, Khrushchev figured out how to get an endorsement from the West and show up as an unmistakable and recognized pioneer than his forerunners, where Stalin would have in all likelihood never procured or accomplished. In his residential strategy, Khrushchev set moving different farming, managerial, and modern changes. In the cultivating division, he propelled his virgin land crusade that looked to improve and â€Å"develop the country’s virgin land and forests† [ (Sakwa, 1999) ], however his system demonstrated grievous. On the regulatory level, Khrushchev started with canceling the courts attempted by a few legislative offices. He conveyed one to make the Central Committee congregations open and open to countless Soviet Officials to talk unreservedly in, and utilized this for his potential benefit since any pronounced restriction to him would be evaded out by the enormous number of his supporters. In the mechanical division, he attempted to decentralize services and change them into nearby boards to turn out to be increasingly responsive to any issues or pressing prerequisites, yet these gatherings did something contrary to what they were foreseen to do. Regardless of his not too bad picture with of the West and his progressively serene and reformist methodology in the USSR, maybe little change happened in his military-safeguard/international strategy. He looked for in the wake of maintaining a ground-breaking Communist Eastern coalition. This is plainly uncovered with the Warsaw Pact that was set together during his standard. Moreover, the virus war strain crested during his rule explicitly at the episode of the Cuban Missile Crisis, wherein he was totally disrespected and had to pull back the Russian weapons store from the isle. Following his significant disappointments, and by 1964, Khrushchev was expelled out of office when he was traveling, and was supplanted by another aggregate authority made out of Alexei Kosygin, Leonid Brezhnev, and Nikolai Podgorny. Nonetheless, and between all the individuals from the â€Å"troika† (three individuals from the aggregate administration framework), Brezhnev was the most conspicuous and persuasive figure. This explanation might be ascribed to the effortlessness of Brezhnev’s character. In his book â€Å"Autopsy for an Empire†, Volkogonov (1998) depicts the last as a customary, cooperative person, and compelling figure ready to energize enormous help to his perspectives in any way he wanted. Maybe the attributes Brezhnev delighted in empowered him to additionally ascend over his two individual rulers, and eventually break free and become the USSR’s sole official. All through his standard of the Soviet Union, Brezhnev actualized a strategy to ensure and support his standard as General Secretary of the CPSU, and yet realized significant changes notwithstanding his customary attitude. Kelley (1987) clarifies that Brezhnev, similar to Khrushchev, needed to leave an imprint ever, in this way he endeavored numerous strategy changes. What made him not quite the same as different pioneers was that Brezhnev acted cautiously with each progression he took n a specific field while offsetting it with another field. Thusly, and thusly, he had the option to deal with his faultfinders and keep away from any contention with them and advance a reasonable advancement. Brezhnev’s household strategy initially centered around Soviet enterprises. His arrangement was to combine di stinctive manufacturing plant â€Å"associations† whereby more fragile industrial facilities could be strengthened by more grounded ones so as to hurry the procedure of modernization [ (Kelley, 1987) ]. He at that point did to cancel the decentralization plans completed by his forerunner Khrushchev His other significant changes originated from the agrarian part. Brezhnev kept on the rule of aggregate cultivating, requested all Soviet possessed land to be expanded by an a large portion of a hectare, and acquainted new hardware with further encourage and quicken creation. In spite of Brezhnev’s extreme interest in agribusiness, that specific division was confronted with numerous dry spells that influenced creation. The consequence of such fiascos constrained the USSR to â€Å"import enormous amounts of grain from W

Essay on SOME Help to the Homeless - 2501 Words

SOME Help to the Homeless Every year approximately 2.3 to 3.5 million people go homeless in the United States of America. Twelve million adults in the US were homeless in the year 2001, or are still currently without a permanent home (â€Å"Homelessness in the U.S.†). How does this happen in â€Å"the land of opportunity?† We think of ourselves as one of the greatest nations in the world, yet citizens are living a life of poverty, often without food, clothing, and shelter. When most people think of fighting homelessness, they think of providing medical assistance, showers, and counseling services for those who suffer mental illness, trauma, and substance abuse. Although these necessities are imperative in helping a significant†¦show more content†¦Society labels him with stereotypes, such as â€Å"other† and â€Å"deviant,† often refusing to serve or to be in close proximity to this homeless person (Wright 7). Such treatment destroys a person’s dignity and sel f-respect. SOME is a unique organization, for it not only provides the needy with food, clothing, and shelter, but the volunteer group also offers medical, dental, personal hygiene, and counseling services (Foundation). With this type of attention, the homeless can escape the negative labels that society forces on them because they do not appear to be homeless. By offering these special personal services, SOME instills a sense of personal dignity in a homeless person. The lack of dignity that these individuals feel is a direct effect of society’s disrespect for the lower class. The stereotypes of the homeless conceived by upper social classes, cause the lower class to lose any respectable role they may have in society. A homeless man in Oberlin, Ohio says, â€Å"Many of us historically invisible people, in our quest for visibility, have chosen to take the routes of organization and alliance building. Despite the growing clamor for non-Toga, and non-English music, and greater representations of other Philippine languages; the local Philippine music industry, which is located in Manila, is still skeptical in making investments. Chordates - Chordata - The Animal Encyclopedia

Chordates - Chordata - The Animal Encyclopedia Chordates (Chordata) are a group of animals that includes vertebrates, tunicates, lancelets. Of these, the vertebrates- lampreys, mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and fishes- are the most familiar and are the group to which humans belong. Chordates are bilaterally symmetrical, which means there is a line of symmetry that divides their body into halves that are roughly mirror images of each other. Bilateral symmetry is not unique to chordates. Other groups of animals- arthropods, segmented worms, and echinoderms- exhibit bilateral symmetry (although in the case of echinoderms, they are bilaterally symmetrical only during the larval stage of their life cycle; as adults they exhibit pentaradial symmetry). All chordates have a notochord that is present during some or all of their life cycle. A notochord is a semi-flexible rod that provides structural support and serves as an anchor for the animals large body muscles. The notochord consists of a core of semi-fluid cells enclosed in a fibrous sheath. The notochord extends the length of the animals body. In vertebrates, the notochord is only present during the embryonic stage of development, and is later replaced when vertebrae develop around the notochord to form the backbone. In tunicates, the notochord remains present throughout the animals entire life cycle. Chordates have a single, tubular nerve cord that runs along the back (dorsal) surface of the animal which, in most species, forms a brain at the front (anterior) end of the animal. They also have pharyngeal pouches that are present at some stage in their life cycle. In vertebrates, pharyngeal pouches develop into various different structures such as the middle ear cavity, the tonsils, and the parathyroid glands. In aquatic chordates, the pharyngeal pouches develop into pharyngeal slits which serve as openings between the pharyngeal cavity and the external environment. Another characteristic of chordates is a structure called the endostyle, a ciliated groove on the ventral wall of the pharynx that secretes mucus and traps small food particles that enter the pharyngeal cavity. The endostyle is present in tunicates and lancelets. In vertebrates, the endostyle is replaced by the thyroid, an endocrine gland located in the neck. Key Characteristics The key characteristics of chordates include: notochorddorsal tubular nerve cordpharyngeal pouches and slitsendostyle or thyroidpostnatal tail Species Diversity More than 75,000 species Classification Chordates are classified within the following taxonomic hierarchy: Animals Chordates Chordates are divided into the following taxonomic groups: Lancelets (Cephalochordata) - There are about 32 species of lancelets alive today. Members of this group have a notochord that persists throughout their entire life cycle. Lancelets are marine animals that have long narrow bodies. The earliest known fossil lancelet,Yunnanozoon,  lived about 530 million years ago  during the Cambrian Period. Fossil lancelets were also found in the famous fossil beds of the Burgess Shale in British Columbia.Tunicates (Urochordata) - There are about 1,600 species species of tunicates alive today. Members of this group include sea squirts, larvaceans and thaliaceans. Tunicates are marine filter-feeders, most of which live a sessile life as adults, attached to rocks or other hard surfaces on the seafloor.Vertebrates (Vertebrata) - There are about 57,000 species of vertebrates alive today. Members of this group include lampreys, mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and fishes. In vertebrates, the notochord is replaced during development by multiple ver tebrae that make up the backbone. College course appeal letter - Assignment Example Time wastage is another reason why I feel that this course should be transferred. At the current state, I will be required to dedicate a lot of time attending classes, doing assignments and other projects required under Course 123 that I did under Course ABC. I therefore believe that redoing this course will be a duplication of efforts and I could spend the time on other course units and related activities such as academic research. In addition, the university ought to acknowledge a credential course certificate from another university and further approve the transfer of such a course for any student. Lastly, the university should allow for the transfer of this course because I not only completed it but also passed and having to repeat it will be a demoralizing experience for me. I hope you will give me the chance to have the course transferred. Thank you for considering this

Sexual Morality Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1

Sexual Morality - Essay Example Thus, performing FGM would be like acting against the medical ethics. This is because it is considered to be an unnecessary surgical procedure. Scholars in the medicine field provide that medicine is meant to treat individuals and save their lives from harmful diseases and not to put their lives in danger. Yet, performing of female genital mutilation endangers the life of women and not saving it in any way (Denniston, Hodges, Milos, 1999). According to Momoh 2005, Female Genital Mutilation is also considered as a practice that is against medical ethics because in most cases, it is practiced by inexperienced and lay practitioners. These so called traditional doctors are completely unfamiliar with the safe methods of performing surgeries and don’t even know how to stop accidents such as hemorrhaging. The standards of medicine clearly indicate that complicated procedures such as surgery are only to be performed by experienced and qualified professionals. The practice of FGM is also unethical in terms of the personal rights of an individual. Most of the young girls who undergo female genital mutilation do not do it out of their own free will. Most are forced by the community to undertake the cut. Thus, they are not allowed to uphold their human rights. The girls and women who undergo FGM have their bodily rights to integrity violated. Those who die in the process are also denied their right to life (Momoh, 2005). The pain inflicted on the women while undergoing the procedure is also a violation of their rights. In my opinion, no one deserves to undergo such suffering in the name of customs and traditions. The moral judgment of people concerning female genital mutilation is that it up holds the social morality of the community. Many people especially in the African countries are have not yet embraced modernization and are still locked up in traditions. They therefore treasure societal norms so much and consider it disrespect and violation when an

Playing Beatie Bow Essay Example for Free

Playing Beatie Bow Essay Kirk was a happy young girl who was cheery and enthusiastic towards her parents and life, until the day her father went off with another woman leaving her and her mother (Kathy). Lynette wanted nothing to do with her father so she changed her name to try and get everything about him out of her life. After wanting to be named after a witch she changed her name to Abigail, which her grandmother suggested. She went down to the park with her young next door neighbours Natalie and Vincent, finding them playing a game called, Beatie Bow. After becoming very interested in a little girl that stood there watching them play (Little Furry Girl) she decided to follow her. This was after having a fight with her mother, when she told Abigail that she had been seeing her father again and that he wanted the two of them to move back in with him and live in Norway where his architectural job was located. Abigail did not take this news well She went for a walk to cool off, when she once again saw the little furry girl and following her found that she had followed her back into her own time of 1873. She got tripped over by the Little Furry Girls father, then found herself at their house. Further into the novel the character Granny (Alice Tallisker) told Abigail that she was the stranger and had the gift. The gift came from the crochet on the top of her dress which enabled her to travel and heal. Later in the book it mentions that the crochet was made by Granny. She falls in love with Judah, who was betrothed to Dovey, and realised firsthand what its like to love somebody but no be able to have them. This helped Abigail realise that she should not be selfish towards her parents and should let them have a second chance of a decent life and marriage. During the time that she was in the past Abigail matured by being influenced by the people that surrounded her, the world in which she lived and the events which occurred there.

Hmos: Making A Killing Essay -- essays research papers

FACT: Currently 46 million Americans live without any health care insurance whatsoever. FACT: The United States is the only industrialized nation in the world that does not provide health care insurance for all of its citizens. FACT: The United States spends more money per person on health care than any other nation in the world. FACT: The World Health Care Organization has ranked the United States 37th in the world regarding the health care a country provides for its people. FACT: No country in the history of the earth has provided universal health care coverage for all its citizens under a private health care insurance system. The facts stated above are not only embarrassing and frightening; they are simply unacceptable. How our country, which takes great pleasure in calling itself â€Å"The World’s Only Superpower†, is unable to provide health care for all its citizens is unfathomable. The citizens of countries in Western Europe have benefited from universal health care polices for almost 40 to 50 years now. Why can’t all of the citizens in America enjoy the same benefits? Especially, at a time our country is in the midst of its greatest economic boom to date. The answer is simple enough. What stands between the citizens of America and a fair, equal and effective national health care policy is one basic human emotion, or lack there of, greed. There is a huge disparity in the distribution of health care in America. Most notably between rich and poor but also between the races. 11 percent of the white population lives without health insurance. That is already a troubling number but it pales in comparison to the 21 percent of African-Americans, 21 percent of Asian-Americans and 33 percent of Hispanic-Americans that lack proper health care insurance. Lack of coverage is not the only problem in our current privatized health care system. There are also huge problems in the coverage for prescription drugs, dental, vision and hearing care, mental health care, preventive care for children, and treatment for drug and alcohol addiction. Health care in our nation should be provided directly by the federal government under what is known as a â€Å"single-payer† health care system. It is a program that would cover Americans from â€Å"the cradle to the grave†. In our current system, hundreds of billions of dollars go to insurance company overheads, unnecessary administrati... ...hat come along with any extended stay at a medical facility. Vice President Gore says he is in favor of â€Å"step by step† movement towards universal heath care; the same universal health care that he and President Clinton both promised to provide to all Americans 8 years ago in 1992. Since 1992, there has been an 11 million person increase in Americans without any health insurance at all. Sounds more like a step backwards than a step towards universal care for all. The only candidate that stands firmly behind a single-payer system, the only candidate who stands courageously in the destructive path of Big Business, the only candidate who is willing to take a stand, draw a line in the sand, and declare once and for all that health care is a basic innate human right is the Green Party Nominee, Ralph Nader. The Declaration of Independence states that all people have the rights to â€Å"Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness†. Do you think that our founding fathers who didn’t have available to them the amazing health care treatments and techniques that we now have available to us would want us to reserve their benefits only for the rich? If asked the same question what is your response?

Execution of Strategy Essay

Executives, or corporate-level managers, are in charge of many things governing the success of the company as a whole. Among these are developing a strategic vision and business mission, setting objectives, crafting a strategy, implementing and executing a strategy and evaluating the performance of the strategy. Strategies are especially important because of the value-creation process that occurs because of it. Sometimes, though, execution of strategies fail and the question here is â€Å"why? † One possible reason is that the strategies developed by the executives are too broad and do not take into consideration the environment of the firm at the operational level, which is the lowest level and the closest to the markets. One possible way to curb this problem is through a bottom-up approach, wherein the operational-level managers submit their proposed strategies and the corporate-level managers evaluate and approve these, or the top-bottom-top approach, wherein the corporate-level managers forward their suggested strategies to the operational-level managers, who make changes accordingly, and evaluate the said changes before approving the strategy. Supple Supply Chain According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary (2007), the term ‘supple’ means to be able to easily adapt to new circumstances. When we say that a supply chain is ‘supple’, we simply mean that a firm is very flexible in terms of its ability to synchronize its functions and those of its’ suppliers to match the flow of service, information and materials with cutomer demand. A firm’s environment is constantly changing, especially in our day and age with the advent of technology which brings about major changes to the flow of communication. A firm that cannot take advantage of these changes is sure to fail. For example, the Daimler-Chrysler Corporation had a major problem with regards to the delay in production when a certain portion of its parts was just a tiny bit too large or too small; it would have taken ages for changes to be made. Today, however, using a program called ‘Powerway’, which ables the firm to collaborate more easily with their suppliers, the firm can now avoid delays by forseeing the problem and adjusting accordingly before it even occurs (Mayor, 2007). The best strategy a firm can employ to ensure a supple supply chain is to take advantage of the advancing technology, as the Daimler-Chrysler Corporation has done. The new programs developed by the IT industries offer a way for firms to know and understand the production and business processes to allow for quick response to changes in the firm’s market (Mayor, 2007). One thing to understand, though, is that one should not confuse a ‘supple supply chain’ with a ‘responsive supply chain,’ because a responsive supply chain is a strategy of the firm to counter uncertain demand wherein a supple supply chain is a characteristic of the supply chain.
